I am trying to install windows 7 on a dell optiplex 7040 sff. The desktop is brand new.

I have windows 10 running perfectly fine, but due to software restrictions, I need to use Win7 instead. I want to do a clean install and I use an flash drive with win7 on it. Ok, so my issue is that when I run the win7 setup I go through it but the SSD is not found.

I have contacted dell after trying to manually install the driver for it and what they directed me towards was that with the new intel skylake processors, there have been some integration issues with win7, etc. I downloaded a Intel Rapid Storage Tech Driver directly from intel based on KB article that Dell has on their site.

It did not work. My coworkers and I have worked on this and I really don't want to call Dell back and be on hold for another hour while they redirect me to a redirected redirected link that redirects to the redirected support topic that redirects me to exactly where I am now (sorry, couldn't resist). Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you everyone. These do have DVD drive.

I am using flash drive/usb install process though, not that DVD is out of the question though. This also has a SanDIsk SSD, not PCI.

Sid, to your point, I am not sure that this would be considered an upgrade in Dell's/Microsofts view, as Windows 10 (and probably 8) works perfectly fine. One thing I just found was that the windows 10 iso has the driver for this while the windows 7 does not. So, maybe I will try to find it buried in that somewhere?

Ben, I will keep trying as well. I tried the latest RST and it still didn't work. I get to the point of browsing to the file and trying to install but it fails. I get to the point of browsing to the file and trying to install but it fails.I just meant it was an upgrade for me. I wanted the Optiplex 7040, but I did not want Dell's SSD or crappy AMD video card, so I pulled the HD and installed my own SSD and nVidia video card. Ben4074 wrote: Thats an interesting one then.

The Dell article you linked is specifically for the NVMe drives which is why i assumed you were using them so my mistake! If you're on plain old sata drives then the newer RST driver might not be the right way to go anyway, do Sandisk provide any driver files for the SSD?

Suppose the other thing to try would be a different SSD or HDD if you have any just to see if that works.do Sandisk provide any driver files for the SSD.not that I have been able to find that have helped. Dell support got back to me with this article. I am just now working through this to see if this helps, but I am not too hopeful.
